"There is no doubt that Antalya is the most beautiful place on Earth"
M.K.Ataturk
Is it possible to rest in Antalya and not see the architecture of "Kaleichi", the gates of Emperor Hadrian, the symbol of the city - the minaret "Yivli", the ancient port and the monument of Attalos?
The city of Antalya was founded in 159 BC. e .. The founder of the city is one of the kings of the Kingdom of Pergamon - Attalos II. The legend says that the Pergamon king Attalos ordered his subjects to find the most beautiful place on earth. After a long search for a place, they found a beautiful bay where the city began to be built. It was at this time that the first fortifications were built. The city was named Attalea in honor of Attalos II, who founded it. In 133 BC. e. The city was conquered by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. By order of Hadrian, the eastern part of the city's fortress wall was renovated and a monumental gate (Hadrian's Gate) was erected in his honor. The legend says that the one who passes through the gate for the first time must make a cherished wish, and it will certainly come true, but the shoes must be polished to a shine. That's why shoe shiners are on duty near the gate.
For a long time, the city was part of the Roman Empire, and after the division of the empire into East and West in 395, it was part of Byzantium for seven centuries.
The city acquired its current name in the 13th century, when it fell under the rule of the Seljuks.
By order of the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat, the Yivli Minaret, the symbol of Antalya, was built in the city center. It has a very unusual architecture - you climb 90 steps of a spiral staircase to an observation deck, which is located at an altitude of more than 30 meters above sea level. The city is visible from here at a glance. Because of the unusual architecture, the minaret is called Yivli, which means “fluted” in translation.
The old part of the city of Antalya is surrounded by fortress walls, which were given the name Kaleichi. Very narrow streets stretch from bottom to top, along the ancient city fortifications. The houses are surrounded by high walls and gardens in which tangerines and persimmons grow. When you wander through these streets, it seems that you are traveling in time.
