In the III century BC. in Perge was born and lived a student of Archimedes, Apollonius of Perga - one of the three great mathematicians of antiquity. At the beginning of our era, the city became an important center for the spread of Christianity. It was here that the missionary journey of the Apostle Paul began in Asia Minor. During the Byzantine period, the city was the seat of a bishop and had three large basilicas.

 

Among all the buildings of Aspendos, the most attractive is the theater of the master Zeno, built in the second century AD. The capacity of the theater is 17,000 people. In Aspendos there is another masterpiece of ancient architecture - a 15-kilometer aqueduct built in the 2nd century BC. AD

 

Legend has it that the king of Aspendos organized a competition to see who was the most loyal and useful to him and the city, and as a reward, the winner was promised a princess as his wife. By the appointed date for the end of the competition, one of the applicants built an aqueduct, claiming that it would supply the city with water from the purest mountain springs. Another built a theatre. Both structures were magnificent and greatly pleased the king. Not knowing who to give preference to, the king suggested that the rivals divide the girl in half.The creator of the aqueduct agreed, but the architect of the tetra preferred to abandon the girl in favor of his rival. The king realized that the noble architect of the theater loved his daughter and would be a good husband to her. The princess married this architect.
